It is
not accidental that
Phraseology is a
branch of Linguistics
because it is
a self sustained
discipline with its
object of investigation, methods
of analyses and
perspective of development.
The term ''phraseology'' is a stylistic one meaning mode of expression, peculiarities of diction, i.e choice and arrangement of words and phrases characteristic of some author or some literary work. Phraseology has gained importance throughout the world. As to the English language, the number of works devoted to Phraseology is so great that it is impossible to enumerate them. That Phraseology is an extensive field of investigation can be explained by two interrelated factors.

Phraseology has gained importance throughout the world. As to the English language, the number of works devoted to Phraseology is so great that it is impossible to enumerate them. That Phraseology is an extensive field of investigation can be explained by two interrelated factors.
Firstly, alongside
knowledge of linguistic
rules of great
generality both in
written and spoken
language ready-made combinations
are used, which
are central to
native-like proficiency in
a language. The
explanation to this
is that ''people
speak to set
phrases, rather than
in separate words''(Melcuk).
Secondly, such
phraseological units being
part of the
lexicon occur in
student textbooks, commercial
advertising, academic-scientific monographs
and prose fiction.
Besides, the theoretical
achievements of phraseologists serve
for practical purposes
too.
Phraseological units,
or idioms, as
they are called
by western scholars,
represent what can
probably be described
as the most
picturesque, colorful and
expressive part of
the language's vocabulary. Phraseology is
a kind of
picture gallery in
which are collected
vivid and amusing
sketches of the
nation's traditions: customs and prejudices, recollections of
its past history,
folk songs and
fairy tales. Phraseology is
not only the
most colorful but
perhaps the most
democratic area of
vocabulary and draws
its resources mostly
from the depths
of popular speech. One
finds in this
amazing picture gallery
a variety of
odd and grotesque
images, figures and
personalities.
